Positive affirmations, the Lion King, and JLo. (Ep.12)

That’s some big Mufasa energy.

Show notes and sneak peek

Kori is all about aligning herself with the power of the universe to create a life of ease, and Laura wonders if the programming of capitalism factors into her limited thinking - and then drops a line from a Mary Oliver poem.

Episode 12 kicks off with an improvised greeting from Laura’s youngest kiddo (who has a fascination with a certain ocean animal and palindromes on the clock, as you’ll discover in a bit). Kori shares a memory of 1990s Mervyn’s commercials, and then the gals quickly dive into their perspectives on positive affirmations. Kori’s early exposure to universal connectedness and the law of attraction started young, and Laura’s early understanding of affirmations are more rooted in negative religious experiences. Laura unpacks this harmful genie in a bottle (not a Christina Aguilera reference) mentality that informs her hesitations, and Kori explains how affirmations are a way of aligning your dreams with your hard work as a way to see results. Next is a discussion of what Kori’s trying to achieve through these affirmations - a life of ease with more flexibility to embrace life on her terms. Can you guess which of the hosts is more of a big picture thinker and who is the details person? Kori states her intentions for her forever home, and Laura points out high interest rates mean she’ll probably park it riiiight where she is right now. Laura asks for examples of affirmations and Kori gives her a whole white board full of them in her office, including one she got from JLo! Kori is going to look as good as JLo because she moisturizes everything all the time. Someone starts singing The Circle of Life from the Lion King. She can’t help herself. Laura practices an affirmation that feels comfortable for her, promptly gets interrupted by concerned dogs, and apologizes for all her weird hangups, wondering if even capitalism factors into her limited thinking. Kori affirms the idea that spirituality and connectedness can exist outside of organized religion (and all its…issues) and Laura shares a funny meme about reading the Bible and butt dialing. Despite all their differences, the gals both firmly believe in the power of words, embracing gratitude, and continuing their conversations.
