Adult children of divorce, Stockholm syndrome, and the Golden Bachelor. (Ep.13)

Laura, Kori, and Keith during recording

Show notes and sneak peek

This week, you actually get to hear (and SEE!) our producer, Keith - who actually used hair gel today! He and Laura share their common experience as adult children of #divorce, and Kori weighs in with her usual wit and wisdom. If you’re in a #relationship that’s not healthy for you, then do something differently.

Keith and Laura share their experiences as adult children of divorce and Kori asks great questions and shares her noticings. We discuss infidelity, growing in maturity as well as growing apart, mental health and the impact of treatment, financial dependence, and sudden endings to what we considered solid ground for our whole lives. We all agree that it’s hard to think of our parents as flawed people, and also acknowledge that none of our parents are angels or demons - it takes two. In reconfiguring family structure, Laura and Keith share how they view themselves, their values, their interactions with their dads’ new significant others, and healthy relationships and boundaries after this formative experience. We share encouragement for those who share our experiences, and would offer to anyone - don’t just stay together for the kids! Laura reflects on the challenges of the timing of divorce: kids usually receive emotional support whereas adult children are expected to move on unaffected. Laura also shares about estrangement from her mother, her rationale for doing so, and why it’s so central to her parenting. Bonus content: Keith wants to nominate his mom for the Golden Bachelor - which Laura is of COURSE watching and cannot get enough of - or listeners can send eligible, kind, senior male information our direction for a full screening. 🙂 Laura shares about her dad’s days of going to the club while living in her house, Keith shares the mind-effery he experienced when his dad began acting counter to the values he instilled in his sons, Kori shares her family’s adorable personalized license plate, and Laura thanks her friends and her doctor that first prescribed an anti-depressant for her. Bless that man!
